GREGORY ROGERS

Congratulations to Greg  for winning the CBCA’s 2010 children’s picture book category with The Hero of Little Street.

Gregory Rogers was born in 1957 and lives in Brisbane. He studied fine art at the Queensland College of Art. He has had several solo exhibitions of his work since 1984. He worked in media and public relations for the Commonwealth Government as a graphic designer for many years before taking up freelance illustration in 1987. 

Gregory's first major illustration commissions were for University of Queensland Press. He has since illustrated scores of book covers for many publishers and has illustrated a large number of educational and trade childrens' picture books. Among these are Auntie Mary's Dead Goat by Margaret Card (Hill of Content), The Postman's Race by Ian Trevaskis (Random House), Tracks by Gary Crew (Lothian Books), Lucy's Bay by Gary Crew (Jam Roll Press), Way Home by Libby Hathorn (Random House) and Running Away from Home by Nigel Gray (Random House). In 1995 Gregory won the Kate Greenaway Medal for his illustrations in Way Home. He is the first Australian illustrator ever to have won this prestigeous British award. Way Home also won a Parents Choice award in the USA and was shortlisted for the ABPA book design awards.

                                        

Other picture books include Beyond the Dusk by Victor Kelleher (Random House), The Platypus: What Is It? by Jo Brice (Penguin Books) which was shortlisted for the 2001 Wilderness Society Environment Award for Children's Literature and also won the 2001 Royal Zoological Society of NSW Whitley Award for best children's book of the year , The Gift by Libby Hathorn (Random House), Princess Max by Laurie Stiller (Random House) which won the 2001 Australian Therapists Association Award, younger readers and picture book category and The Rainbow by Gary Crew (Lothian Books). In total he has illustrated over 40 picture books.

His first wordless picture book The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard was selected as one of the Ten Best Illustrated Picture Books of 2004 by the New York Times and short-listed for the CBCA Awards, Younger Readers, 2005 and the APA Best Designed Children's Picture Book, 2004. It also received a 2004 Australian and New Zealand Illustration Award from Illustrators Australia and was a Notable Children's Book of the Year for the American Library Association. His latest book is the much anticipated Midsummer Knight, which is a sequel to The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard and promises to be every bit as successful.Gregory lives in Brisbane, Australia. He shares a cluttered, old house with his partner and two cats.
