The Spotlight is on Anzac Day

Allison Marlow Paterson is the author of the 2016 ABIA and CBCA longlisted title Anzac Sons: Five Brothers on the Western Front, the children’s version of the adult non-fiction title Anzac Sons: the Story of Five Brothers in the War to End All Wars.

Allison presents talks and workshops in a range of situations and to audiences from kindergarten to retirement villages,
Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, libraries, book shops, service clubs and of course, she loves to visit schools.   She is a judge for the Redgum Young Aussie Writers’ Awards and considers herself very privileged to have reviewed children’s literature for Magpies Magazine for over a decade.

Allison has received many positive testimonials of which this is just one:

"I want to thank you again for your visit. My class enjoyed the opportunity of sharing their stories with you on Monday. 'Granny's Place' is the perfect book for this age level to learn about history and find out about the history of our own families. Your power point presentation and your personal delivery was very age appropriate and you held the interest of the students. The teachers have commented on how you encouraged students to hold onto their stories and drawings. At Creek Street Christian College we encourage our students to find out their gifts and talents and to use them. Your presentation also showed how the process takes place when writing a book. We found this interesting coming from a published author and will help in our classrooms when involved in writing activities."
Sharon, Creek St Christian College

Maria Gill's latest illustrated non-fiction book ANZAC Heroes (Scholastic, 2016) showcases the exciting tales of 30 Australian and New Zealand heroes during WW1 and WW2. It won the 2016 Best Non-fiction Book Award and the Book of the Year Award at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults.

Maria has been conducting talks in schools for the last 14 years as an author and another 10 years as a teacher. Maria uses props (puppets, artefacts, posters), PowerPoint, and gets students interacting during her sessions: role-plays, question and answer, quizzes, and puppet performances. Maria also teaches workshops about writing biographies, researching, creative non-fiction, journalism, and short stories. Maria is visiting Brisbane between May 29 and June 8.

"We appreciated Maria's presentation because the children, and the teachers, not only found her engaging and inspiring but it was refreshing to gain an author's perspective of non-fiction writing. "
Mongawai Primary

As always, if you would like to book Allison or Maria or any of our authors/illustrators/poets and other speakers, please visit our website or phone 07-3040-8465.

"You must never feel badly about making mistakes ... as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons."
