The Spotlight is on Brian Doyle
Brian Doyle has appeared on Brisbane Community Television station Bris 31 Digital on its creative arts program Put Some Colour in Your Life. The 30-minute episode he featured in demonstrated just a few of the many simple, professional drawing tips that Brian teaches in classroom workshops. He has shown thousands of children in hundreds of Australian schools how to ‘Draw for Fun'. Brian's aim is to get everybody’s pencil swinging in seconds, particularly those young children and teens who believe they can’t draw. Students have a lot of creative fun too!
Further, Brian has been working on two new initiatives - a new workshop entitled "The Power of the Editorial Cartoon" and a School Fete/Fundraising opportunity entitled "Photoon".
The new editorial workshop runs for 90-minutes and is based on his lifetime experience in the Newspaper, Advertising, Television, Magazine and Printing world.
"Photoon" as mentioned, is offered to Schools as a fundraising opportunity or additional event at school fetes.
Details on Brian and his two new initiatives can be found on his profile page on our website.
Brian was absolutely fantastic. He engaged enthusiastically with the students and was thoroughly entertaining.
St Columba's Primary School - August, 2017
Brian was fabulous, he kept the children engaged the whole time and they were delighted with the drawings they created with him. I was very impressed with how enthusiastic he was about being with us. This is the first time we have had Brian and I would have had him sooner at Unity!

Congratulations Simon Wagan Watson
Poet, essayist, scriptwriter and performer Samuel Wagan Watson has been named the winner of the $20,000 Patrick White Literary Award for 2018.
The annual award was established by Patrick White using the proceeds of his 1973 Nobel Prize for Literature, and is traditionally awarded to authors who ‘have made a significant but inadequately recognised contribution to Australian literature’.
Watson is the second Indigenous writer to win the award in its 45-year history, after Tony Birch was awarded the prize in 2017. Both authors are published by the University of Queensland Press (UQP). Watson is the author of three chapbooks and five collections of poetry, including Of Muse, Meandering and Midnight (UQP), which won the David Unaipon Award for an unpublished Indigenous writer. His collection Smoke-Encrypted Whispers (UQP) won the 2005 Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry and the Book of the Year Award in the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. His most recent full-length collection, Love Poems and Death Threats (UQP), won the 2016 Scanlon Award for Indigenous poetry, and was shortlisted for the 2016 South Australian Premier’s literary awards. The award was presented on 7 November at the State Library of Queensland.
New Course for Teachers:Dealing with Radicalisation
Over his 22 years as an Internet Detective, Brett Lee spent thousands of hours tracking online predators. He closely watched the ways they groomed their targets, and found that for many radicalising children was a systematic process.
Online grooming is a terrifying and growing trend, and Brett is determined to equip as many caretakers and educators as possible with the tools required to tackle it. That's why he's incredibly excited to release a new professional development course specifically designed to help teachers deal with the radicalisation of the students in their care. This new course will be delivered by a panel of presenters - all with backgrounds in law enforcement. You can find out more about them here.
We'd love to give you the first opportunity to book your school in for 2019.
Brett has also detailed the tactics of predators online and in print to help parents and carers better recognise the signs that the children in their care might be a victim. Brett would love for you to share these resources around your community!
