Voices on the Move
We have been working hard at Speakers Ink in response to Covid-19 restrictions as many bookings have been changed or cancelled, while other opportunities have come up.
Deborah Abela and Gus Gordon are each locked in to tour Brisbane in the week commencing 30 August, 2021 to replace their cancelled 2020 tours; Phil Kettle has also replaced his cancelled tour with a confirmed booking in Brisbane in Book Week 2021 - the week commencing Monday 23 August, 2021 and Jess Black has also replaced her cancelled tour with a confirmed booking in Brisbane during the week commencing Monday, 16th August, 2021.
Additionally, we encourage you all to check out the full list of wonderful speakers that we represent, as we have added to our list of speakers substantially over the last year. All have something valuable to offer!
Congratulations - 2020 YABBA winners
The Young Australians Best Book Awards (YABBA) winners were announced and we were thrilled to learn that Tristan Bancks' Detention won the award in the Fiction for Years 7-9 category.
Sima and her family are pressed to the rough, cold ground among fifty others. They lie next to the tall fence designed to keep them in. The wires are cut one by one. When they make their escape, a guard raises the alarm. Shouting, smoke bombs, people tackled to the ground. In the chaos Sima loses her parents. Dad told her to run, so she does, hiding in a school and triggering a lockdown. A boy, Dan, finds her hiding in the toilet block. What should he do? Help her? Dob her in? She’s breaking the law, but is it right to lock kids up? And if he helps, should Sima trust him? Or run? This moment, these decisions, will change their lives
Tense and taut, Detention will have you on the run, minute by minute, with Sima and Dan, making you ask: What would I do if this were me?
CLARE ATKINS, AUTHOR OF BETWEEN US
Utterly believable. Felt like I was holding my breath from start to finish. Bancks champions the strength and decency of young people caught up in a harsh world not of their making.
MARK SMITH, AUTHOR OF THE ROAD TO WINTER
The Spotlight is on...Australia Reads
From 1-12 November, Australians of all ages and from all walks of life are invited to share and celebrate the joys of reading. Whether you are picking up a book for the first time or your head is already stuck in one, there are plenty of books, activities, and events as part of the festivities. You can find more information about Australia Reads here.
The main event on Thursday 12 November is the Australian Reading Hour. You are invited to stop what you are doing for an hour, pick up a book and read to yourself or the children in your life. Here are some of their recommended books to explore on the Australia Reads website.
