Samantha Wheeler studied Agriculture, worked with dairy farmers, and taught science, before writing her first children’s book, inspired by koalas, in 2011. Her books, which include Smooch & Rose, Wombat Warriors, Mister Cassowary, and Turtle Trackers have been shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards, the Readings Book Prize, The Wilderness Society Environmental Award and the Royal Zoological Society, Whitley Commendation.
Her most recent story, Everything I’ve Never Said, was inspired by her youngest daughter, who has Rett Syndrome and can’t talk. Samantha hopes her books will inspire everyone to speak up and make a difference.

Samantha was very engaging with the children. They really enjoyed hearing about her life and how she ended up being an author. They also loved hearing about how she got her story ideas and that a story wasn't just written after one draft. They learnt a lot. The staff were really impressed with her conversation about her daughter. Very gutsy to share. It was wonderful how Samantha signed the books for all our students - they were thrilled about this. They are enjoying reading her books now.

Samantha Wheeler visited Wooloowin State School on Wednesday 28 August and presented 4, one hour sessions for Years 3 - 6 students. Her presentations were tailored to each of the year level student groups. The students were totally engaged in the presentation and this was due to Samantha's style of presentation with anecdotes and information about her books. She also discussed the art of writing with the students, and as Writing is a focus for us at Wooloowin this year, her talks hit the mark. All teachers and the Principal and Deputy, had positive feedback to share with me regarding Samantha's visit and I would not hesitate in recommending her as a guest author for these year levels.

This is Samantha's second visit to our school and on both occasions her presentation has been outstanding. Her empathetic connection with her audience coupled with her bravery and honesty in answering the children's questions was remarkable. Samantha provided insights into the world of writing and publishing which are useful for budding authors. We would be happy to have Samantha visit us again in the future.
