In Kirsty's author talks she covers things like: how she became a published author (a story of fail and fail again), her working process - taking her audience through the 7 or 8 stages between the initial idea for a book and holding the actual published thing in your hand, and talking to students about how they can apply this approach to their own work. Kirsty also talks about inspiration in a very practical way, removing the mystique often attached to this part of writing. She uses simple examples to illustrate that building a story is very much a case of problem solving, and coming up with ideas is something unique and instinctive in everyone.

Even with large groups, Kirsty keeps her session interactive and often includes re-enactments of dramatic events to put the students directly in the action.

Raised in Queensland, she is a keen surfer and now lives in Sydney with her husband and two young children but still visits her roots regularly.

"The one thing I strive to do in my talks, and also my writing, is be honest. I think it's crucial students understand that failure isn't a bad thing, and even when you do get what you want it's complicated. To me, truly committing to a goal is more important than any outcome."

Testimonials

  • ...Kirsty Eagar was great. The girls, especially in year 11, really enjoyed listening to her. I would definitely recommend her as an inspirational speaker especially for students year 10 and above.

  • It was a wonderful visit last week and an experience that did support many of the messages we deliver to students regarding writing, creativity and engaging in literacy. I was particularly thrilled with the messages Kirsty gave regarding the process and long journey attached to being a writer.
