Annaleise Byrd

Annaleise Byrd

Annaleise Byrd grew up on a farm in Queensland, ignoring most farm-related pursuits in favour of reading books. She then spent nine years in England and Canada, neglecting a variety of jobs in favour of reading books. Eventually, she realised the best way to get away with this was to become an author.

Annaleise now writes funny books for kids and lives in Brisbane with her husband, two young sons and rescue greyhound. Her debut middle grade novel, Losing the Plot, was published by Walker Books Australia in March 2024. It was followed by a sequel, Down the Plot Hole, in April 2025, along with her debut picture book, You Are Not a Pup!, with Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing.

Annaleise works part-time for the Ipswich District Teacher-Librarian Network, where she is part of the editing team behind their beloved annual Book Week publication and one of the organisers of the biennial StoryArts Festival Ipswich. She is also a Readers Cup State Finals judge, a judge for the Kids’ Cancer Project’s Write a Book in a Day fundraiser, and a volunteer book reviewer for StoryLinks.

Annaleise’s author talks and workshops, aimed at a primary-aged audience, are entertaining, interactive and inspiring. Get in touch today to find out how she can bring the magic of stories alive for your students!

WORKSHOPS

Magical Portals, Fantastical Worlds (Year 3-6)

Students will learn about portals and how they can transport characters to other worlds. We’ll discuss examples from popular children’s fiction, as well as from Losing the Plot and Down the Plot Hole. Then we’ll examine some ‘magical’ objects for inspiration before creating our own magical portals and fantastical worlds! This engaging 45- to 60-minute workshop is suitable for class-sized groups of up to 35 students.

All About Inciting Incidents (Year 3-6)

Students will learn what an inciting incident is and why stories need them. We’ll discuss examples from popular children’s fiction, as well as from Losing the Plot and Down the Plot Hole. Then we’ll come up with some inciting incidents of our own! This thought-provoking 45- to 60-minute workshop is suitable for class-sized groups of up to 35 students. It can be attended as a stand-alone session or as an add-on to the Magical Portals, Fantastical Worlds workshop.

Create a Funny Character (Year 3-6)

Students will learn how to use exaggeration to create a funny character. We’ll discuss examples from popular children’s fiction, as well as from Losing the Plot and Down the Plot Hole. Then we’ll create our own funny character! This fun 45- to 60-minute workshop is suitable for class-sized groups of up to 35 students.

How to Write a Story (Year 3-6*)

This hands-on workshop begins with a presentation of several key writing tips, followed by quiet writing time during which I provide students with one-on-one encouragement or advice. Topics covered include generating ideas, planning and writing a story, the importance of editing, and practical ways to ‘elevate your writing’. By the end of the workshop, each student will have produced a unique short story. This inspiring 90- to 120-minute workshop is suitable for class-sized groups of up to 35 students.

Please note: This is a versatile workshop that can be scaled up or down according to the time available. Schools have used this workshop to tie in with a Narrative Writing Unit, to build skills ahead of NAPLAN, and as the basis of a whole-school writing competition. I have even run an in-depth version of this workshop over two full days as an enrichment activity for selected Year 5-6 students, with the resulting stories being published in an anthology. I’m happy to tailor this workshop to your goals to ensure it’s a wonderful experience for your students!

*This session can also be adapted into a 45-minute workshop for Year 1-2 students by having the outcome be an illustrated acrostic rather than a short story.

OTHER

Storytime With an Author (Prep-Year 1)

For your youngest students, I can offer a storytime in which I read them several picture books (including You Are Not a Pup!)… and maybe even get them to read one to me! This option works well as a 30-minute session. It makes a nice add-on if I’m presenting other sessions to your older grades and you don’t want the little ones to miss out on the opportunity to meet an author. If you like, we can also include a scavenger hunt in which children hunt for the characters from You Are Not a Pup! around their classroom or library!

Testimonials

  • Having Annaleise visit as part of our school’s lead-up to Book Week and our culminating One School One Book event was a real highlight for our students. Her author talk, ‘Fairytales – Weird, Wonderful, Wild’, took students on a fascinating journey through the origins of fairy tales and the Brothers Grimm. A dramatic reading from her book had the students laughing and completely engaged, and they were thrilled to ask their own questions about her books and writing process. Teachers found the session fun, relevant and engaging, and many commented on how much the students connected with both the stories and the author herself. What stood out most was the time Annaleise took to personally speak with as many children as possible, leaving them inspired to read and connect more deeply with the book we shared as a whole school. It was a fantastic experience that enriched our celebration of reading.

  • I had the pleasure of working with Annaleise through the Author Pen Pals program, and I cannot speak highly enough of her engagement with the children. We were paired with over 130 Year 3/4 students in a library learning context. At all times throughout our ‘snail mail’ correspondence, Annaleise was swift with her lengthy, informative, humorous and regular responses. We were also lucky enough to have Annaleise visit our school for a day and engage with all students from Prep to Year 6. She brought this same enthusiasm, warmth, humour and kindness to keep the students enthralled in each session… from answering questions, sharing her inspiration for her books, giving some writing tips and reading her books using fabulous voices. Annaleise was generous with her time and her talent, and she was a wonderful advocate for Australian children’s literature. Book her now!!
