Conor McCammon and Clayton Zane Comber

Conor and Clayton use an interactive approach to their talks and workshops where they can. One of their common ‘interactive talk’ formats is for Years K-6, and involves them splitting the group of students in two to play a game of trivia with clues that appear on a slideshow. Each section of questions relates to a piece of advice about writing great stories: using the senses, creating interesting characters, and putting them in challenging settings and situations. By keeping this format interactive, Conor and Clayton give the kids concrete examples of these writing skills and inspire them to be creative in their own storytelling. This format can work for groups as large as 150 students, and can run from 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes as required.

Conor and Clayton also provide workshops for smaller groups, and have tailored versions for years K-12. These workshops involve stepping through a series of exercises. Splitting into smaller groups, the students are tasked with briefly writing (fictionally) about a character’s biggest fear, describing a setting through the senses without telling the audience where it is, and other exercises designed to bring their creative writing to life. For younger groups, Conor can also turn these into illustration exercises, such as creating characters by mashing up two unrelated things.
