Jo Dabrowski

Jo Dabrowski is an internationally published, Melbourne-based children’s author and bookseller who is passionate about children’s literacy.
Jo’s books are known for being filled with humour and heart and include the hugely popular Dear Broccoli, which won the 2026 CBCA Shadow Judging award for Best Picture Book. The Thing About Christmas was a CBCA Honour Book in the Early Childhood Category in the same year. And her latest picture book is the riotously funny The Good Decision.
Jo’s middle-grade novels include Get Your Act Together, Doris Kozlowski, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Readings Prize, and The Making of Martha Mayfield, a 2026 CBCA Notable book.
Before writing for children, Jo worked as a copywriter in advertising agencies in Melbourne and London. Jo now writes from home in what used to be her sons’ playroom. The family still calls it that because it’s where Jo continues to play, just with less Lego and more words.
As much as she loves writing, the highlight of Jo’s week is the story time she hosts at her local bookshop every Friday morning.
Imagine That!
We all know authors use their imaginations when they write a story but … what is our imagination? Where do ideas come from? And how can we use our own imagination to have ideas for stories?
A lively and interactive workshop that involves Jo showing students how she uses her imagination when she writes picture books and how easily kids can use their imaginations too!

How To Write Like Broccoli
It’s hard to find a kid that’s never tried to persuade Mum or Dad to let them stay up later. Or convinced them to buy them an ice cream. Kids are great at being persuasive in person. But what about on the page?
A fun and interactive workshop that starts with Jo reading ‘Dear Broccoli’, then takes students on a search for all the persuasive tools and tricks that Broccoli and Frank employ in their letters and ends with students writing a persuasive letter of their own.
Suitable for Year 2 to Year 6

Writing is Rewriting
It’s surprising how many kids think that writing is a natural talent, not a skill that can be learned. In this workshop, Jo shows students how writing is no different to riding a bike, learning an instrument or kicking goals. No one gets it right first time round, even the professionals. Like any craft or skill - writing takes practice.
An engaging and interactive session where Jo shares tips, tricks and reveals the number of drafts she writes for each of her books. (Spoiler alert.) It’s a lot!
