Kathy's book All Birds have Anxiety has been shortlisted for the People's Book Prize in the UK. This is a people's choice award: if you like the book, please vote and leave a comment if you wish. All Birds Have Anxiety - Peoples Book Prize Life as a bird can be stressful! With a light-touch & quizzical depiction of bird behaviour, All Birds Have Anxiety uses colourful images and astute explanations to explore with gentle humour what it means to live with anxiety day-to-day, and how to begin to deal with it. |

Kathy is also the author of several books dealing with ADHD, and Asperger's syndrome. She has been invited to be the guest author on Readilearn this month - a website for teachers.
Readilearn: Teaching children with ASD — ideas for the classroom with guest author Kathy Hoopmann
Do you have children with Asperger Syndrome in your classroom and wonder how best to cater to their needs? Do you have friends with Asperger Syndrome, or maybe have it yourself?
Congratulations Nick Earls
Not only has Nick Earls been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Queensland this week, he is also the brains behind a new Radio National interview series called the Green Room.
Experienced writers participate in "Interviews" that are more like behind-the-scenes festival-green-room conversation than interviews. Four interviews have now been recorded and edited, and the first (Cory Doctorow) has been broadcast and is ready for podcasting.
Here’s a bit more info on the thinking behind it, including the questions each author was given to choose from:
https://nickearls.wordpress.com/
Nick's PhD research focused on the novella, and whether technology-driven changes in publishing, author-reader relationships and readers’ lives have made the novella a viable proposition.
“From my craft research, I wrote five novellas, and then I applied what I’d learned in my publishing research to publish them,” Dr Earls said.
New Voices
We are happy to announce that we have two new voices joining us here at Speakers Ink: Emily Gale and Emma Middleton.
Emily Gale has been involved in the children’s book industry for twenty years: the first decade in London as an editor and freelance writer, and the latter in Melbourne as a reader and literary agent and a children's book buyer. She spent several happy years at Melbourne's award-winning bookstore Readings, during which time she was instrumental in establishing their Children’s Book Prize. |

Emma Middleton is a children’s author, illustrator and presenter. After a career in performing arts, during which time she danced for the Vienna Ballet, performing in ballets, operettas and musicals, Emma returned to Australia to direct and teach at The Brighton Dance Academy. Now Emma combines her love of story with her appreciation of the performing arts, to write, perform and engage with children; creating fun-filled and heart-warming stories and student workshops that engage and inspire. |
Room to Read

This campaign is aimed at getting 50 Australian schools to raise $365 to send a girl to school for a year, in one of the 10 program countries that Room to Read works in. We are proud to have passionate speakers who want to change the world and if you are looking for ideas about what you can do to make a difference check out:
