Damien was born in Townsville and Haydn in Mount Isa. It was almost inevitable that these brothers would mesh their talents to create their debut children’s book The Adventures of Triz, The Babysitter. Haydn has written stories all of his life and despite the added challenge of being colour blind, Damien has always loved to draw.
Born with Asperger’s Syndrome these Queensland brothers have endured significant challenges throughout their lives and this book shows the personal connection they have with the character of Triz, as he also faces challenge after challenge. They feel this character and his journey, should be a solid example of how, no matter what life throws at you, if you persevere and can accept that sometimes you may fail, but are prepared to face the music and learn from your mistakes, you will succeed.
Currently working as a freelance artist, Damien studied Animation and Film at Griffith University. He is also collaborating with his brother on an eight-part series for television.
Haydn is signed with Agency 888 and currently working as an actor.
The brothers have recently released the second book in their the adventures of Triz series, titled “Triz Destroys the Sun” and are looking forward to creating many more adventures for Triz.
They reside in Brisbane.

Triz the Babysitter - Workshop
Sessions 40 mins - 30 Students - (flexible to meet the school's needs)
Damien and Haydn aim to give the students a unique experience with their “big book” presentation (an A1 size copy of The Babysitter which Haydn will read from) which is complemented with dinosaurs from the book, a model of Triz, a 30cm replica T-Rex tooth and some REAL FOSSILS from the age of the Dinosaurs. This is sure to be a hit with the kids!
- Introduction - Haydn talks about himself, how and when the story was created and how it was further developed by his brother Damien, a talented illustrator.
- Activate Prior Knowledge Question Session - Damien uses a display of all dinosaurs from the book
- Discussion - Haydn will engage the students in a discussion on predicting what the book might be about and further explore the back cover (blurb).
- Reading of the Book
- Picture Walk - Haydn will ask specific questions regarding the story where students begin by recalling the main events, then sequencing the story in pictures; focusing on the beginning, middle and end. He will then unpack new vocabulary, clarify understanding and draw on prior experiences and background knowledge of the students. Damien will talk to students about the illustrations, ask questions and take question time.
- Activity - Students will then be put into pairs, where they will be provided with a magnifying glass and encouraged to explore the book to find hidden objects/creatures, that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Children really love this activity (sometimes finding things that Damien had forgotten he drew!).
- Activity – Finally the session will finish off with students colouring in their own gliding lizard and naming it. (Coloured pencils required for this activity)
Testimonials
As part of our Literacy Day celebrations, we had a very special visit from author and illustrator duo, Haydn and Damien Crespan.
The Crespan brothers shared their writing process, the detail behind each illustration and how they’ve overcome challenges such as a colourblind illustrator!
We were truly captivated by their debut children’s book, ‘The Adventures of Triz’. Not to mention, their dinosaur display and the REAL fossils they brought for us to explore.

“Students love Haydn”
We were lucky to host Haydn at Heatley High where he led a discussion with ourYear 8 – 10 students in Inclusive Education. Not only did our students love Triz, the character that Haydn brought to life they loved they way he engaged with them as a peer.
Haydn remarked how well-behaved the kids were. I can say they are not always this way, it was only that they were so engaged with the activities that Haydn led them through, that the thought of mis-behaving or acting out never entered their head.
Students and Teachers alike really enjoyed this event with Haydn and we would havehim back anytime. We’d also recommend that other schools invite Haydn along to speak with their students… it’s a one of a kind experience.
Heatley Secondary College - August 2022It was our pleasure to host former Heatley SS students and now published author/illustrators Haydn and Damien Crespan in our school library this week. Haydn and Damien read their book "The Adventures of Triz the Babysitter" to each of our year three year 1 classes. They also spoke about their creative processes in terms of writing the story and matching the illustrations to the text. They brought along dinosaur props for the students to interact with - one of which was an original model of Triz that Damien had constructed. We look forward to the further adventures of Triz the babysitter!

Choose Your Own Adventure!
To tie in with the 2025 Book Week theme, ‘Book an Adventure’, Dave Lowe has adapted his popular ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ workshop, as a ‘presentation’-style 45- / 60-minute session for large groups of students, from Years 3 to 8. In this fun, highly-interactive session, Dave will share insights into ideas-generation and plotting, and give each student a story template, as well as all the tips and tricks they’ll need to make their own short ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’-style book that they can take home and try out on friends and family.

What people are saying
Karen was able to engage the students with her knowledge, humour and personal journey as a writer. Her delivery on how to develop a character and narrative was most helpful to students and teachers.
We were delighted with Isobelle’s visit and would certainly like to have Isobelle visit again. We would certainly recommend Speaker’s Ink and Isobelle to other organisations and / or schools.
Kristin presented an ‘Author Talk’ for our Year 5 students on her latest release in conjunction with Football Australia ‘Football Fever: The Kick off’. She engaged with the students very well throughout. They were fascinated with stories from her life, family, pets (especially Winter) and the process of writing using story prompts. The students had a lot of questions and Kristin kept them engaged throughout the whole hour. So many of them are looking forward to reading this book, the first in th [...]
We had six virtual sessions with Chris, spread across two different days. I appreciated that he took on feedback I delivered from the first days sessions and applied this to the latter three sessions. Applying the feedback brought some more structure to the sessions and allowed the students to learn more about Chris and his practice, which showed them why the workshop was relevant and why he was a relevant person to deliver the workshop (as opposed to the same prompts coming from their teachers) [...]
Chrissy’s book ‘The Magic of Boxes’ complimented our Prep literacy unit perfectly. The students loved the story, especially the repetitious phrasing, and it sparked their imagination to imagine and then create. Chrissy was able to engage the students and use her magic story telling techniques, singing, student actions to interact with the story and props, to keep the students engaged.
We recently held a Literature & Arts Festival at St. Catherine's Catholic College, The Whitsundays for our Secondary students. All the authors that attended were entertaining, engaging and inspiring. I have had so much positive feedback from students, staff and library colleagues. The students have all been raving about how excellent the festival was, and they were disappointed at the thought of returning to classes for the rest of the week. I have had reluctant readers coming into the library t [...]
We have now booked Prue Mason for the past 4 years and she always meets our expectations. When students have read and analysed one or two of her novels and can then ask questions of the author face to face, it is very special. Her workshop makes the reading relevant but also stimulates in the children an interest to write for fun. We shall book Prue for next year and would encourage other schools to do so as well.
Concluding Book Week, today our students enjoyed a visit from Author; Milly Reynolds and Illustrator; Simon Deshon aka Siggo, who together created the book "St Sebastian, Jack & the Silver Lining". Their book is about friendship, loyalty, accepting differences and finding silver linings. Students from K to 6 were engaged with writing and drawing workshops with Milly & Siggo, who read the story to them, explained the steps of creating a story and then showed them how to create expressions on cha [...]
Vikki’s warm and passionate love of books is infectious for students of all ages! She engaged and energised our students leaving the lower grades enthused about reading and writing, while the upper-level students were inspired with practical tips to help make their writing more interesting.
Wonderful, warm and engaging. Well done Lorraine - looking forward to having you back again!
