Where do ideas come from? How do we use structure to build them into stories? How does research shape even the silliest of ideas? How do we create characters that inspire and drive our stories forward? How can drawing help us to write when we're stuck? How do ideas in our imaginations turn into books we can read in the library?
Entertaining, interactive and grounded in real craft, Matt's 'behind-the-scenes' school session delivers genuine classroom value while focusing on inspiring students to fall in love with reading.

What people are saying
Irena is a wonderful woman. At all times she was co-operative and willing to contribute her time and talent for the service of others. Her attitude and presentation were always first class. I have no hesitation in highly recommending Irena as an Artist-in Residence
Thank you for recommending Kyle for this year’s Literature Festival Day. It was a huge success and we have had wonderful feedback from students and teachers.
It was a delight to have Sarah Pye and Pongo take part in Essex Book Festival. It was the first time we have had an orangutan in the festival and what an adventure it was! Thank you, Sarah, for making the afternoon so fun and interesting - the children (and grown-ups) all had a wonderful time learning about nature and orangutans. Please come back again soon!! This talk was brilliant, fun and my child learnt lots too. It was a great event - Dr Pye was brilliant with the kids and telling her sto [...]
Tim Harris is such an engaging and energetic author. His work in front of big groups as well as in classrooms with students is captivating. A successful author who really knows how to connect.
Brett kept the boys engaged for the entire hour with lots of positive comments and thank yous from them. The parent presentation was also well received.
Thank you once again, for being the most superb speaker's agency possible, with so much care and commitment.
Paridhi visited our classroom last term to motivate the children's narrative writing. She demonstrated how she illustrates her story books, read one of her stories and completed some guided drawing with the students. The children were very engaged and interested in Paridhi presentation. They were wowed when she used her technology to show how her draft drawings could be turned into the finished coloured illustrations. The students also loved her story book, Maharaja’s Quest, and enjoyed findin [...]
Our students enjoyed Sheryl's Author-in-Residence with us. She did a great job appealing to such a range of ages and I appreciate the preparation she put in ahead of time. Her sessions also inspired the older grades who have not yet read Secrets of Eromanga to continue and use the text in their lessons. The students have even done some follow up research about the Elliot dinosaur.
It was really really good and I liked going through the photos. She took a really good photo and we all didn't know it was a fake! I enjoyed that she had a lot of description about how she made her three books come together. She told us about the prehistoric times and the characters. It was fun. Jo gave us tips for our writing and it was nice to know that new and different stuff.
Cori Brooke was invited to speak to our Prep to year 3 students, as a part of our Book Week 2020 celebrations. She captivated them with her stories, funny props and entertaining anecdotes. She explained her personal writing process very well and it was very inspiring for students to see her notebook. Our students were full of questions and wonderment at meeting her as an author and I can report that they were thoroughly entertained for each of the 45 minute sessions. It was a very successful day [...]
What an absolute joy it was to have Kat working at our school this week, as part of the May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust. Both students and teachers have been inspired with her passion for poetry and children’s literature. Kat conveyed how only a few select words on a page can be the makings of a great piece of poetry! How brilliant, is this sage advice for the reluctant writer! Kat’s lesson content and creativity will definitely help our students continue to shine like diamonds!
The Rhyme and Meter Workshop was so fun and engaging. Our students were left clapping out rhyming books all afternoon!. Thank you for putting together such an interactive session.
I recently had the pleasure of working with Rory H. Mather, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. His insights and expertise into lyrical story writing and rhyme is amazing and the art of story and persistance is truly inspirational. Rory’s approach combines practicality with deep emotional intelligence, enabling students to unlock their potential and achieve their writing goals with a never give up approach. The strategies he offers are not only effective but also easy to implement, making a [...]
The delightful Jackie French visited us this morning. Jackie is a captivating speaker and her work is always well received. Is there is any chance that we can procure another booking for Jackie in 2013? We would love to have her visit us again!!!
We had a wonderful visit with Kim. She is an enthusiastic, energetic and entertaining presenter. The students responded beautifully to Kim. They loved her stories, were entranced while she showed them how she painted on silk and enjoyed ‘The 12 Underwater Days of Christmas’. Our library spaces were so colourful and beautiful with all her paintings displayed. She was very friendly and easy to work with and I will certainly have her visit again in the future.
